About

Mackinac Neurology

Remote and rural areas are experiencing a lack of good medical specialty care. People either have no access to specialists, or must travel great distances and spend a lot of time to get get to medical appointments.

Recently, in response to the national situation, the federal government has opened up access to remote visits with physicians using telemedicine. Mackinac Neurology is changing its practice models to focus on serving the population of northern Michigan with neurological consultations using modern telemedicine technology.

Building on many years of experience in all aspects of care for complex cases with neurological problems, Mackinac Neurology is now making this care accessible to patients in areas where this care has not been previously available.

A. Robert Spitzer, MD

Dr. A. Robert Spitzer draws on many years of experience in all aspects of neurological care. He is a Graduate of Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed training in internal medicine, neurology, and then advanced fellowship training in neurophysiology and movement disorders at the National Institutes of health.

Subsequently, he was faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and director of the neurophysiology laboratory. He also had a joint appointment in the engineering school, and conducted research in analysis of neurophysiological signals using neural networks. He has published extensively in medical journals, presented numerous papers at national and international conferences, and been an invited speaker regarding his research. His research has covered numerous topics including neurophysiology, intensive care neurology, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, and sleep disorders. He achieved a rank of full Clinical Professor of Neurology.

He is board certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Sleep Disorders. As recognition of a lifetime of academic achievement, he has been elected Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Spitzer focuses his practice on classical clinical neurology. This approach uses detailed clinical assessment of the patient, with an emphasis on the history and examination and patient interaction, to provide effective care that is focused on results and understanding. While modern technology is incorporated into the care appropriately, the emphasis is on clinical care. For many patients in remote areas, this can reduce the cost and burden of testing, while providing thorough analysis and treatment of each individual case.

"Providing effective care that is focused on results and understanding."
